Dear guests and geology lovers

Geologically speaking, by going from the young granites of Bergell in the west to the (geological) window of the Lower Engadine in the east, you can walk from Africa to Europe without getting wet, while at the same time enjoying the beautiful landscape. You can see deep sea deposits, find minerals and fossils, and even deposits with dinosaur tracks which are the relics of a shallow sea from 300 to 100 million years ago.

In the sediments of the Engadine lakes, and in the ice of the glaciers of the highest mountains, is shown the history of the valleys, from the ice-covered Engadine of 20'000 years ago up to the present day landscape, shaped by agriculture, settlements, tourism and climate change.

Particularly widespread is the evidence of the different effects of ice; its former extent and the activities associated with it: the glaciers themselves, the rocks they have shaped, the potholes formed by glacial water, the moraines, with their atypical plants, the almost mythical permafrost with its amazing creeping shapes, the rock glaciers which could easily be confused with real lava flows - its a real open-air laboratory - it's a real geoparc.

We wish you the very best in your expedition of discovery through the South Grisons.
